Mr William Nyarko The Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA) has called on the Government to ratify ILO Convention 158 to provide employment security for private sector workers. This Convention, which entered into force in 1985, provides that termination at the initiative of the employers shall be based on valid reason which are proven misconduct, proven  incompetence, and operational requirements. The Centre said when workers were assured of employment security, subject only to good conduct, competence and productivity, and would not be terminated arbitrarily, workers would not only feel they are treated with dignity but are likely to be loyal, conscientious, and contribute to increased productivity. This is contained in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Mr. William Nyarko, to mark May Day being celebrated in Ghana under the theme: Sustainable Pension for all: The Role of Social Partners. ACILA is a research and education, non-partisa

Keta seaport job: Akufo-Addo mocking us – MP

President Nana Akufo-Addo is mocking the people of Keta by appointing Dr Alexander Adusei as the Director of the yet-to-be-built Keta Sea Port, Keta MP Richard Quashigah has said. “ … A seaport does not exist in Keta today for which a director is required. In fact, it could be seen as an attempt to ridicule and mock the people of the area by the president, the current father of our homeland,” he said. At a press conference on Monday, 1 April 2019, Mr Quashigah accused Mr Akufo-Addo of wilfully causing financial loss to the state and demanded the withdrawal of the appointment. According to the MP, it takes about GHS100,000 to maintain a director for a port in Ghana, thus, described the appointment of Dr Adusei by the president as unnecessary and an attempt to milk the public purse. An appointment letter dated 19 March 2019 signed by the Minister of Transport, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiama, congratulated the Ohio State University-trained lawyer on his appointment. However, Deputy Minister of T

Electric buses to be introduced soon - Titus Glover

Deputy Minister of Transport, Titus Glover The government plans to introduce buses powered by compressed natural gas and electric buses as part of efforts to reduce air pollution on the roads in the country. The environmentally-friendly buses are expected to phase-out the operations of urban buses — popularly called ‘trotro’ — that use dirty fossil fuels such as diesel and petrol. The Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Daniel Titus Glover, who stated this in Accra last week, said electric mobility was a promising technological solution to addressing climate change pollutants, and, therefore, called on investors and interested parties to partner the government in rolling out the initiative. “As phase-one, we are collaborating with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to access funds from the Green Climate Fund to introduce electric buses into our public transport system,” Mr Titus Glover said. “Though there are potential barriers, we have an opportunity to implement fundamental changes

OccupyGhana proposes 12-step plan to tackle road carnage

Pressure group, OccupyGhana have outlined 12 measures it believes must be undertaken to addressing the increasing spate of road carnage in the country. In a statement the group said the situation can be attributed to the poor nature of the country’s roads, lack of enforcement of traffic laws among other reasons. “Most of our roads are in an abominable state. This is the result of decades of neglect by successive governments. Added to this neglect is indiscipline on the part of some drivers and the profound lack of enforcement of traffic laws by those in charge,” it noted. The two incidents have brought to the fore again, concerns about the safety of Ghana’s roads especially intercity highways, some of which are notorious for fatal crashes. Many analysts have proposed various measures to address the menace including ensuring that all commercial buses have speed limiters fitted on them. OccupyGhana as part of its proposals believe that the buses should be fitted to ensure th

Government appoints Director for non-existent Keta sea port

An appointment letter dated March 19, 2019 and signed by the Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiama congratulated Dr. Alexander Adusei, a Ohio State University trained lawyer. He was also a chairman of the NPP Columbus, Ohio branch in the US. The minister asked the Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to “take the necessary action to give effect” to the appointment. Keta MP Richard Quarshigah says the appointment is “baffling” and “preposterous.” “It can be likened to Ghana Education Service posting a head teacher to a community where indeed there is no school, no teachers and for that matter no students or pupils,” he said in a press statement. He called the appointment “infuriating” and highlighted issues of causing financial loss to the state. The Keta Sea Port exists – on paper.
